Because of this post I googled about George Mackey ( I met him in the sixties when he visiteg Bombay and I remember babysitting for him. He was surprised that somebody would babysit for pleasure and forced me take a whiskey bottle). See http://www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=362 and Stephanie Singer’s comment.

    Dear Swarup,

Thanks for the pointers to all those wonderful pieces. Via Stephanie Singer’s homepage, I even read a book review that Prof. N Mukunda wrote for one of her books in Current Science.

By the way, was Prof. Mukunda in TIFR when you were there? Just curious–he is one of the finest lecturers, and I enjoyed his group theory and differential geometry courses a lot.

Yes; we were in the same housing colony. His wife (Usha Iyengar in her earlier days) was a table tennis player and was either number one or two tennis player in India. I used to see Mukunda and his children often but never attended any of his lectures. He seemed to be a very gentle person.

    Dear Swarup,

That is nice to know; I have heard about her table tennis skills when I attended the reminiscences of his colleagues and students on his retirement–several speakers mentioned it.

He indeed is a very gentle person (and had a very refined sense of humour–he probably is the only lecturer who will quote PG Wodehouse while talking about Lie derivatives ).
