Isn’t it similar to the extra undercooling required by the presence of elastic stresses (arising very naturally;-))?

Yes; in some sense; however, I love it when things that we see at micron scales are shown at such large scales — and arise naturally, of course!
The last one I saw was Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld instabilities in minerals in contact with water underground!
