Prof. Srinivasa S R Varadhan of Courant Institute receives the 2007 Abel prize:
Srinivasa S.R.Varadhan, a professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences since 1966, was today awarded the Abel Prize in Mathematics by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for “his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations,” which the Academy characterized as “hugely influential” and lauded for its “great conceptual strength and ageless beauty.”

Dear Swarup,
Very nice to hear that; here too I hear very good things about Indian education–not just by Indians themselves. Not to say that there is no room for improvement in our education system as it stands now, or to make is inclusive–just that we are not too bad off.
